Sales have risen strongly as the French, worried about potential power cuts this winter, buy candles for emergencies.
According to the BFMTVof December 7, the French transmission grid (RTE) warned that this winter in the case of tight power supplies may be partial rolling blackouts. Although the blackout will not last more than two hours, the French are buying candles ahead of time in case they need them.
Sales of basic candles have increased in major supermarkets. Candle sales, which had already started to pick up in September, are now on the rise again as consumers stock up on candles in their homes “out of an abundance of caution”, buying mainly basic white boxes that “burn for up to six hours” each to provide light, help with heating and create a beautiful atmosphere.
